Van Dijk refuses to agree that title race is over

Virgil van Dijk said the memory of losing the Premier League title race to Manchester City in 2018-19 is keeping Liverpool grounded after his side s 2-0 victory over Manchester United at Anfield.

The Netherlands international scored his side s opener after 14 minutes of a game that threatened to slip through their fingers when the visitors finished strongly, but Mohamed Salah doubled Liverpool s lead in second-half stoppage time to put the Reds 16 points clear at the top of the table.

Chants of we re going to win the league rang out around Anfield at the final whistle but Van Dijk insisted the team s focus would immediately be on a difficult trip to Wolves on Thursday.

Everyone wants us to say something about it but we won t get carried away, Van Dijk told Sky S…

City loss spurs United on, says Park

Manchester United midfielder Park Ji-Sung says his side is out to make amends for their 6-1 drubbing by Manchester City.

Sir Alex Ferguson called Sunday’s English Premier League defeat his worst ever as a manager, as United capitulated in the second half and conceded five goals after Jonny Evans was sent off.

Ahead United s league trip to Everton on Saturday, Park told the club’s official website: We have to concentrate and everyone has to turn up to show the City game has not affected us. We have to get over that.

We have to put it right on the pitch and we have to prove it. It s a very important game to us and we have to go there and fight to get the points.

Guardiola optimistic on injuries to Haaland, Phillips and Walker

Manchester City coach Pep Guardiola is hopeful of Erling Haaland returning from injury at the weekend and feels optimistic Kalvin Phillips and Kyle Walker will be fit before the World Cup.

Haaland, who has scored 17 goals in 11 Premier League games this season, missed the weekend win over Leicester City due to an ankle ligament problem.

The striker sustained the issue during City s 0-0 Champions League draw at his former club Borussia Dortmund last week, with Haaland withdrawn at half-time.

Guardiola confirmed on Saturday that Haaland would also miss Wednesday s visit of Sevilla, with City s confirmation as group winners meaning there is no need to take risks.

But he is seemingly positive about the prospect of Haaland returning in time to face Fulham at t…

´Scary´ Nunez making major impact for Liverpool, says Carragher

Darwin Nunez can be a scary presence for Liverpool but still needs to grow his overall game, says Reds great Jamie Carragher.

The Uruguay international got on the scoresheet in the Premier League side s 2-0 win over Napoli in the Champions League on Tuesday, for his sixth goal of the season across all competitions.

Nunez had a tough start to life at Anfield with a red card against Crystal Palace seeing him serve an early season ban, but is starting to show his potential on Merseyside.

With more attempts on a per-90-minute basis (6.7) in the English top-flight this term than anyone else, Carragher suggests the stats back the influence the 23-year-old can have on matches.

It s really interesting watching Nunez, he told CBS. He comes on and he makes a huge …

Tony Hibbert Praises Ross Barkley; Christian Seifert Rates Schweinsteiger Higher than Ronaldo

Everton right-back Tony Hibbert has praised the ability of young starlet Ross Barkley, asserting that the 17-year-old Everton midfielder is the next big thing in England.

Hibbert did not shy away from comparing Barkley to former Everton striker Wayne Rooney, who played Toffees from 2002-04.

Wayne was a jack the lad. You could go out on the street with him and get him on the park and he d be the same he d be diving everywhere, going in goal, it d be madness,” Hibbert explained.

“Ross is a bit more level-headed. He s also bigger. Potential-wise I think he is up there with Wayne.

I don t know if he s a central midfielder or if he is like a No.10 off the forward or on the wing. He has got the feet, the dribbles.

With…

Sturridge: Chelsea are bigger than City

Daniel Sturridge says although former club Manchester City are now five points clear at the top of the table, he will never regret moving to Chelsea.

The 22-year-old made the move to London in June 2009 and, although things started slowly with the Blues, he has now earned his first senior England call-up for the squad to face Spain and Sweden.

The striker, who has managed four goals in seven games in the Premier League this season, is thankful for his time at City but believes that Chelsea are still the bigger club.

It was stressful moving from Manchester but I couldn t turn down Chelsea, he told The Sun newspaper.

It s the biggest club in the Premier League and I ll never regret it.

I ll never forget what City did for me but Chelsea is my ma…

Ballon d´Or: How they voted

Cristiano Ronaldo won his third Ballon d Or at a ceremony in Zurich on Monday, but he was not at the top of everyone s ballot.

The Real Madrid and Portgual star received 37.66 per cent of all the votes from the coaches and captains of international teams and the world s media.

Barcelona and Argentina forward Lionel Messi was second with 15.76 per cent, with Germany and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer a close third having received 15.72 per cent.

Predictably given their domestic rivalry, neither Ronaldo nor Messi selected each other in their respective top threes.

Ronaldo voted for Real Madrid team-mates Sergio Ramos, Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema, while Messi named Argentina and Manchester United winger Angel di Maria and Barcelona midfielders And…

Barca presidential candidate Riera: I wouldn´t pull out all stops to keep Messi

Barcelona presidential candidate Pere Riera said he wouldn t pull out all the stops for Lionel Messi to stay at Camp Nou.

Josep Maria Bartomeu quit as Barca president last week, ahead of a vote of no confidence against his leadership, along with the entire board of directors.

Following Bartomeu s decision to quit it has been reported Barcelona s presidential elections will be held in the second week of January, with Riera announcing his candidacy.

They have lodged a £15m bid for Zaha, who returned to Crystal Palace from Manchester United on a permanent basis on winter transfer deadline day 2015.

Swansea still chasing points

Swansea City remain hungry for Premier League points as they close on their club record tally before Saturday s visit of Hull City.

Garry Monk s side sit eighth in the league on 43 points, while their record Premier League total is 47 – registered in 2011-12.

Despite their relative comfort in the table and a 10-point deficit to Tottenham a place above them, Monk is determined to rack up another win and move closer to history.

It has been a difficult season for them, but they have a good group with quality players, said Monk.

They pushed Chelsea all the way in the last game and I was really impressed with them.

Hull want to steer clear of the relegation zone, so they will be a determined side coming here.

But we are focused on wi…
